What we can do if we have warning or alarm on the transceiver?

Blog Single

This tutorial related to the previous tutorial about how we to read DDM (you can access on here http://www.qonitech.com/techLibrary/documentation/how-to-read-transceivers-digital-diagnostic-monitoring). Please remember there are 2 kinds of warning/alarm that's LOW and HIGH, each alarm have different solution and usually the alarms appears for Rx Power, Temperature and Tx Power.

Q : What we have to do if we are facing low warning/alarm for Rx Power?

A : Low warning/alarm for RX Power caused by ;

Use the wrong transceiver - First we must check, do we already use the correct transceiver for our need? Example our fiber distance is 65KM but we use transceiver with 40KM distance, the transceiver budget power is not enough for our need. Solution we must use the suitable transceiver for our need.

Low quality of the fiber - After we sure that we use the correct transceiver we must check the fiber / splicing / connector quality, we can do it using OPM or OTDR tools to measure the fiber loss. Solution repair you fiber / splicing / connector.

Low quality of the transceiver - If the fiber is good and we already use the correct transceiver but still have warning/alarm for RX Power, the problem could be in the transceiver. Solution you can change with the new transceiver first then check with your transceiver vendor

Interface Problem - If the fiber/transceiver is good and we use the correct transceiver but still have the alarm, the last thing maybe the interface of the box (router, switch, etc) have a problem. Solution you can change to the other port or check with your equipment vendor.

Q : What we have to do if we are facing high warning/alarm for Rx Power?

A : High warning/alarm for Rx Power appears caused by too much power. It can be we use the wrong transceiver type, example we use transceiver with 40KM distance but the fiber optic real distance only 2KM. But if already use the correct transceiver we can put attenuator to reduce the transmit power.

Q : What we have to do if we are facing low warning/alarm for Temperature?

A : Maybe in the tropical country like Indonesia it's very rare case for low warning/alarm for temperature, but if this happen we have to check your room / data center temperature, check our equipment temperature status or it can be error in the DDM feature of our transceiver.

Q : What we have to do if we are facing high warning/alarm for Temperature?

A : High warning/alarm for Temperature caused by

Use the wrong transceiver - Transceiver according to installation location have 2 types, first standard transceiver and industrial transceiver. Please make sure when we want to install the transceiver at outdoor area we use industrial type.

Abnormal room temperature - Please check data center / room temperature.

Abnormal equipment temperature - If the data center room have a good temperature, we must check equipment status. Do the equipment also generate temperature alarm? If the equipment is facing high temperature it can be air flow problem or filter problem, we can check with the vendor to make sure it.

Low quality of the transceiver - Last if everything is normal, maybe the problem is coming from the transceiver it's self. Maybe the transceiver have quality degradation, we can check with the vendor.

Q : What we have to do if we are facing high/low warning/alarm for Tx Power?

A : To the point we don't have too much to do if we have Tx Power alarm, since this is automatically coming from the transceiver, so you must inform your transceiver vendor or change the transceiver.

Q : What we have to do if we are facing high/low warning/alarm for Voltage/Bias Current?

A : Same like Tx Power, we don't have too much to do if we have Voltage/Bias Current alarm, since this is automatically coming from the transceiver, so you must inform your transceiver vendor or change the transceiver
